ACA opens season with Ranky Tanky ATHENS - Athens Area Council for the Arts presents Gullah group Ranky Tanky, in the first 2017-18 Black Box Concert Series event on Aug. 25. The Black Box Concert Series is supported by premier sponsors Financial Guidance Partners and Madison Avenue Pharmacy as well as the Tennessee Arts Commission. "Gullah" comes from West African language and means "A people blessed by God." "Ranky Tanky" translates loosely as "Work It" or "Get Funky!" In this spirit the Charleston, S.C., based quintet performs timeless music of Gullah culture born in the southeastern Sea Island region of the United States. From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts, from heartbreaking spirituals.to delicate lullabies, the musical roots of Charleston, S.C., are "rank" and fertile ground from which these contemporary artists are grateful to have grown. Tickets are on sale now for all events in the Black Box Concert Series. Adult tickets purchased in advance are $15, whereas tickets purchased at the door are $20, subject to availability. Student tickets are $10 in advance or at the door. All Black Box Concert Series shows are in the Sue E. Trotter Theater at The Arts Center in Downtown Athens.
